When the Room Feels Too Narrow

Reflections on leadership and building what lasts

Reflections on leadership and building what lasts

I attended a large conference recently where, outside of the speaker lineup, I was one of very few women of color in the room.

What stayed with me wasn’t just the numbers. It was the feeling. I found myself more attuned to the staff supporting the event than the people attending it. And that surprised me. I’ve spent my entire career in rooms like this. I know how to operate in them. I know how to lead in them.

But something felt different this time. When you are actively building something that prioritizes diverse perspectives, when you are intentionally creating space for voices that are often not heard, you start to experience these environments differently. You notice more. You feel more. And if I’m honest, it stung. Not in a way that stops you, but in a way that reminds you there is still work to do. So you don’t wait for the room to change. You build your own.

At 4040 Agency, that means assembling teams that reflect a broader range of perspectives. It means creating space for real dialogue, even when it introduces friction. It means pushing for better thinking when we see decisions that will limit a brand’s growth or relevance.

That approach is not always the easiest path. It takes more time. It requires more care. And yes, it costs more. But it also produces work that is sharper, more durable, and more reflective of the audiences brands are trying to serve. We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We are building something very specific.

And I’ve found myself wondering, more than once since that day, whether others have felt this too. Not just from the outside looking in, but from the inside. Moments where you realize, even unintentionally, how narrow the room can be. Those moments stay with you.

And for me, they’ve only sharpened the commitment to build something better.
