One of the earliest lessons I learned in my career came from leaders like Chuck Williams, Howard Lester, and Pat Connolly. Pay attention to the customer. Really pay attention. Not in a surface-level way. In a way that requires you to listen closely, observe behavior, and understand what people actually need, not just what they say. That lesson has stayed with me across every chapter of my career.
And it’s one I carry directly into how we work at $040 Agency. Because the truth is, great brand work does not start with design. It starts with understanding.
Understanding the client.
Understanding their customer.
Understanding where those two are aligned and where they are not.
Too often, that work is treated as a phase to move through quickly. Something to check off so you can get to the “real” work. We see it differently. That is the work. We were deep into a recent engagement, multiple rounds in, with work that had already been well received internally. On paper, everything was working. But something wasn’t landing. Not with the clarity or precision we expect when the work is truly right. So we paused.
We went back. Listened again. Pushed deeper on the customer.
And ultimately made the decision to pivot, rewriting the narrative entirely. It was not the efficient choice. But it was the right one. And when we landed it, everyone felt the difference.
It’s why we spend the time to listen deeply. Why we push on briefs when something doesn’t hold. Why we are willing to pivot when the work is not yet right. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about us. It’s about building brands that connect in a real way with the people they are meant to serve.
When you get that right, everything else becomes clearer.
The strategy sharpens.
The design holds.
The work lasts.
